Once the season ends, it is tempting to cancel coverage on the boat, camper or motorcycle until spring. Before you do, it is worth a quick call. Your toys can still be stolen, damaged by fire or harmed by a storm while they sit in a barn, garage or storage lot.

Do not cancel, adjust

Some carriers let you reduce coverage while a vehicle is stored, keeping protection for theft, fire and other damage while you are not using it. Options vary by carrier and policy, so we will look at what makes sense for yours.

Check where it is stored

  • Let us know if your boat or RV is stored somewhere other than your home.
  • Ask the storage facility what their coverage does and does not include. It usually does not protect your property.
  • Your homeowners policy may provide only limited coverage for boats, trailers and equipment, if any.

A quick storage checklist

  • Take a few photos of the vehicle and its equipment before you store it.
  • Keep receipts for upgrades and accessories in a safe place.
  • Use a quality cover and lock trailers and hitches.
  • Write down serial numbers for motors and electronics.

Before spring

Give us a call before you take it back out so your coverage is in place for the season. It is also a good time to review your limits, especially if you added accessories or upgrades.
