According to the American Red Cross, home fires kill about seven people in the U.S. every day, and fire experts say you may have as little as two minutes to get out once the smoke alarm sounds. Here is what we recommend every family in Poland and the Mahoning Valley check this season.

1. Make sure your smoke alarms work

Put a smoke alarm inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

Press the test button once a month.

Replace any alarm that is 10 years old or older. The date is printed on the back.

Need help? The Red Cross installs free smoke alarms through its Sound the Alarm program.

2. Practice a two-minute escape plan

Know two ways out of every room.

Pick a meeting spot outside, like a mailbox or a neighbor’s tree.

Practice with everyone in the house twice a year, including at night.

Once you are out, stay out and call 911.

3. Check that your insurance would rebuild your home today

Building costs have climbed in recent years. If your dwelling coverage was set years ago, it may not cover what it costs to rebuild now. When we review a home policy, we look at:

Dwelling coverage: is it close to today’s cost to rebuild?

Personal property: would it replace your belongings at today’s prices, or only pay what they are worth used?

Additional living expenses: how long would it pay for a place to stay while your home is repaired?

Your deductible: could you comfortably pay it after a loss?

Quick tip: walk through your home with your phone recording video, opening closets and drawers. Save it somewhere other than your phone. It makes a claim much easier if you ever need one.

Want a second set of eyes on your coverage?

We are an independent agency in Poland, Ohio, and we compare coverage from multiple carriers. A home insurance review is free. Schedule a review or call or text us at 234-254-5660.

One of the best parts of working in the Valley is the community, and the next few weeks are full of local traditions worth getting out for. Here are a few favorites to kick off the holiday season, and your own town likely has a celebration or two of its own worth checking out.

Dates and times can change from year to year, so please check with each organizer for this year’s details before you head out.

Small Business Saturday – November 28

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is a great day to shop the local stores and restaurants in your own community. Small businesses are the backbone of the Valley, and every purchase helps keep them here.

Olde Fashioned Christmas at Lanterman’s Mill

Mill Creek MetroParks traditionally hosts this event at Lanterman’s Mill around Thanksgiving weekend, with holiday decorations, music and family-friendly activities at one of the most picturesque spots in the area.

Lighting of the Village in Poland

Downtown Poland’s Lighting of the Village is a long-running community tradition that usually takes place in early December, bringing neighbors together on the village green to welcome the season.

Lighting of the Green in Canfield

The Canfield Village Green gets dressed up for the holidays each year with help from local volunteers and the Canfield Rotary, and the lighting celebration is a favorite for families.

Boardman Park Holiday Lights and Fellows Riverside Gardens

Boardman Park’s holiday light display and the seasonal displays at Fellows Riverside Gardens are both easy evening outings once December arrives.

Know of an event or a local business we should feature?

We’d love to hear about it. Send us a note or call my agency at 234-254-5660, and we may include it in a future post or business spotlight.

If you drive the back roads anywhere in the Mahoning Valley this time of year, you’ve probably seen more deer near the road. That’s not your imagination. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, nearly half of Ohio’s deer-related crashes happen in October, November and December, and November alone accounts for about 22% of them.

Below are some general suggestions many drivers find helpful this season, plus a quick look at how insurance typically handles an animal collision. None of this can guarantee you’ll avoid a deer, but a little awareness can go a long way.

When deer are most active

The Highway Patrol’s data shows the riskiest times are around dawn and dusk: roughly a quarter of deer crashes happen between 5 and 8 a.m., and about a third between 6 and 10 p.m. That lines up with the darker commutes after the time change in early November.

A few general driving suggestions

Consider slowing down on wooded or rural roads, especially early in the morning and in the evening.

Use high beams when there’s no oncoming traffic, which can help you spot eyes reflecting near the road sooner.

If you see one deer, assume more may follow. They often travel in groups.

Safety officials generally advise braking firmly and staying in your lane rather than swerving. Swerving can lead to hitting another vehicle, a tree or a ditch, which is often more serious than hitting the animal.

Motorcyclists may want to take extra care: the Highway Patrol reports motorcycles are involved in only about 1% of deer crashes but account for most of the fatal ones.

If you do hit a deer

Pull over somewhere safe, turn on your hazard lights and check for injuries.

Stay away from the animal, even if it appears hurt. An injured deer can be dangerous.

Call the police if anyone is hurt, the vehicle can’t be driven safely, or the animal is blocking the road.

Take photos of your vehicle and the area if it’s safe to do so.

Give us a call before getting repairs started, and we’ll help you with the claim process.

How coverage typically works

With most carriers, hitting an animal is handled under comprehensive (sometimes called “other than collision”) coverage, not collision. That matters because the two often have different deductibles. If you swerve to miss a deer and hit something else instead, that is generally treated as a collision claim. If you only carry liability coverage, damage to your own vehicle usually isn’t covered in either case. Every policy is different, so it’s worth knowing which coverages and deductibles you have before the season gets busy.

Not sure if you have comprehensive coverage or what your deductible is? Call or text my agency at 234-254-5660 or request a call back, and we’ll take care of it for you.

This post is general information only. These suggestions are not a guarantee against an accident, damage or loss, and following them does not ensure a claim will not occur. Coverage depends on your specific policy terms, conditions and exclusions, which vary by carrier. Please review your own policy or contact us with questions.

The ideas below are general maintenance tips many homeowners use to help lower those risks. They are not guarantees, and no checklist can prevent every loss, but a little preparation can go a long way.

1. Help protect pipes from freezing

Consider insulating pipes in unheated areas like crawl spaces, garages and along outside walls.

During extreme cold, some homeowners let faucets drip or open cabinet doors to let warmer air reach the pipes.

If you will be away, keep your home heated. Ask a plumber or heating professional what setting makes sense for your home.

Know where your main water shutoff is so you can act quickly if a pipe does burst.

2. Keep gutters clear

Clogged gutters can contribute to ice dams along the roof edge, which may let melting snow work its way under shingles. Clearing leaves and debris before the snow arrives is a good habit.

3. Check your sump pump

Many homeowners test their sump pump before winter and consider a battery backup in case of a power outage. A plumber can help you decide what fits your home.

4. Have your heating system looked at

Routine furnace service and chimney cleaning by a qualified professional can help your system run safely and efficiently through the season.

5. Watch for snow and ice on walkways

Slips and falls are a common winter concern. Keeping sidewalks, steps and driveways cleared and treated, and making sure railings are secure, can help reduce the risk.

6. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Fresh batteries and a quick test are worth doing at the start of the season. Check the manufacturer’s date on each detector, since they don’t last forever.

Know what your policy covers

Every policy is different. In general, many homeowners policies cover certain sudden and accidental damage, while damage that develops over time or relates to maintenance is often excluded. Water or sewer backup is usually not included unless it is added to your policy, and flood coverage is a separate policy. The only way to know for sure is to review your own policy, and we are happy to walk through it with you.

Not sure what your policy includes? Call my agency at 234-254-5660 or request a call back, and we’ll take care of the review for you.

These tips are general information only and are not a guarantee against damage or loss. Following them does not ensure a claim will not occur, and they are not a substitute for advice from a qualified contractor or professional. Coverage depends on your specific policy terms, conditions and exclusions, which vary by carrier.

Once the season ends, it is tempting to cancel coverage on the boat, camper or motorcycle until spring. Before you do, it is worth a quick call. Your toys can still be stolen, damaged by fire or harmed by a storm while they sit in a barn, garage or storage lot.

Do not cancel, adjust

Some carriers let you reduce coverage while a vehicle is stored, keeping protection for theft, fire and other damage while you are not using it. Options vary by carrier and policy, so we will look at what makes sense for yours.

Check where it is stored

Let us know if your boat or RV is stored somewhere other than your home.

Ask the storage facility what their coverage does and does not include. It usually does not protect your property.

Your homeowners policy may provide only limited coverage for boats, trailers and equipment, if any.

A quick storage checklist

Take a few photos of the vehicle and its equipment before you store it.

Keep receipts for upgrades and accessories in a safe place.

Use a quality cover and lock trailers and hitches.

Write down serial numbers for motors and electronics.

Before spring

Give us a call before you take it back out so your coverage is in place for the season. It is also a good time to review your limits, especially if you added accessories or upgrades.

Have a boat, RV or motorcycle to store? Call my agency at 234-254-5660 or request a call back, and we’ll take care of the rest.

When we review an auto policy, one of the first things we look at is the liability limit. It is the part of your policy that protects you if you cause an accident that injures someone or damages their property, and it is the part most people never think about until they need it.

What the numbers mean

Liability limits are usually written as three numbers, such as 250/500/100:

250: up to $250,000 for injuries to one person

500: up to $500,000 for all injuries in one accident

100: up to $100,000 for damage to other people’s property

Why state minimums can fall short

Ohio’s minimum limits are 25/50/25. A single trip to the hospital, a few weeks of missed work or a newer vehicle can go past those amounts quickly. If the costs from an accident you cause are higher than your limits, you could be personally responsible for the difference, which can put your savings, your home and future paychecks at risk.

Why 250/500 is our starting point

It gives you meaningful protection for a serious accident.

It is usually the minimum required if you want to add an umbrella policy later.

The price difference between low and higher limits is often smaller than people expect.

Many people also choose to match their uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to their liability limits. That coverage protects you and your passengers if the other driver has little or no insurance.

Want to see what higher limits would cost? Call my agency at 234-254-5660 or request a call back, and we’ll take care of the rest.

This article is general information and general suggestions only, not advice for your specific situation. Every household is different, and higher limits do not guarantee that a claim will be covered in full or that a loss will not exceed your coverage. Coverage, limits and pricing vary by carrier and policy, so review your own policy or give us a call with questions.
